1967 TRIUMPH TR4a IRS
Gearbox: 4 Speed Manual
Dating from the last year of production, this November 1967 UK registered TR4A is among the last cars made and has had just 3 owners from new. It was originally painted pale blue but during the restoration by the vendor the car was painted a period Ford colour -Ford Purple Velvet (F4), on request of his daughter who was the main driver. As you can see in the photographs soon after purchase in 1991 the vendor performed a major restoration which was completed in 2001. This involved new inner wings, b posts and door skins. The chassis was shot blasted, painted and waxoyled. The car was treated to Revington suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars, and telescopic rear shock absorbers.
The engine had a full rebuild, with new unleaded head, new pistons, liners, camshaft bearings, balanced crankshaft and flywheel. Other improvements included a Hi Torque starter, stainless steel sports exhaust. For comfort the original seats were replaced with a pair of Mazda MX5 seats in black leather with purple stitching to match the exterior. The gearbox is the standard, with overdrive on 3rd and 4th and it was rebuilt about 6000 miles ago. The car also comes with a Surrey top.
The speedo currently reads 34,575 although the Vendor thinks the speedo may have been changed at some time. The DVLA holds MOT history back to 2005, when the car had covered 34,404. It appears the mileage did not change at all between 2007 and 2015 so perhaps the odometer was not working? As the car has been totally rebuilt it not really a concern. The V5C is present along with 19 old MOTs, stretching back to 1982. The car starts easily, and sounds in fine health.
Soon after the restoration was finished it was entered in a Triumph Club Concours where it won its class, and it was the subject of a club magazine article. The colour may not appeal to those who prefer their cars to be completely original, but the period purple hue suits the car, and has been well executed.
All in all a stylish TR4 that looks the business, definitely worth a closer look! It must be one of the best out there.
